In camera editing, is a technique used by filmmakers and cinematographers. It is where instead of editing each scene or shot after filming, each shot or scene is filmed in a strict order. So no editing the scenes in order is needed to be done, as when the film is developed, it is already in the correct order or the order of the narrative. The process of using this technique, takes a long time to manage, having to make sure each scene is in a strict order according to the film or director. But some of this time can be won back. Being after the filming has been done, there will be no editing to be done afterwards as they will be developed in order and wont have to edit to match the narrative of the film or script.
This technique was mostly used before editing was more developed, in the early days of the film industry. This type of technique is not frequently used in present day as now we have very high tech editing software's, that are easy and less planning needs to be done in pre-production or production, if editing after the filming is done in post production, or production. In camera editing takes a lot of precision if the director wants it to be successful. They must start to record each scene at the right moment, so it flows in well and combines with the other scene. So if two scenes in the film or in the same locations but happen at different moments in the film. The crew must go back at the time they need that location again, instead of filming both scenes in the same location to get it out the way. In, in camera editing you cannot edit or trim the scene later in the filming or production process.
This technique is more successfully used in events such like sport events. As it can all be filmed in, in camera editing as it all follows a sequence; first half of the game, second half of the game and etc. The purpose of this technique In camera editing is; storytelling. So the film can tell a story through a sequence that is in chronological order, to engage the audience on the story that is being told in a smooth and swift pace. Its to help the pace of the film, making sure the narrative is in the correct order so the audience can follow the narrative and engage with the story. Its also so the audience do not get confused if there are scenes in the wrong order that do not follow the narrative.
Now, lets talk about the history of In camera editing. The Lumiere Brothers. A kinetoscope; One of Thomas Edison's creations, is one of the first motion picture projector, that lets you see film like a projector using a blue light bulb. When the Lumiere Brothers father was invited to Paris to see Thomas Edison's creation, he brought back a piece of the kinetoscope film for the brothers. Which inspired them to make their own invention. The Lumiere Brothers invented a camera that combined a printer and a projector. Calling it the Cinematographe. They also added parts from sowing machines, to make the device have non continuous movement. Which allowed them to firstly create the technique; In camera editing. The cinematographe, was able to shot a film or scene, being able to stop and then start filming each segment. Which then combined to make a full narrative at the end. Or even a full film. Which changed the whole world of editing in 1962. Here is an example of in camera editing. Showing you the footage that the camera filmed, being in order of what it would be when developed into a full film. This footage is one of the early films by the Lumiere Brothers This is from one of their first films that came out in 1895. It shows how editing has changed from one of the first films to present. Editing wasn't as advanced as films shown today.
Another example of a fairly present use of in camera editing, is from the film; A Beautiful Mind, which was realised in 2001. The director of the film, Ron Howard. Wanted to shoot the film using the technique, filming the film in chronological order. Wanting the editors to not have a big job, so most editing is done when filming in production. This would of saved the film a lot of money, due to no editing having to be done in the post production. It would of also helped the team create pace for the film, so it follows a good pace with the sequence filmed in the right order with no fancy editing used to confuse the audience of what's going on in the scene. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2002, for best edited film. So sometimes, simple editing with a strong narrative being show in a film, can go a long way and get the film far.
