~ Manipulation Of Diegetic Time And Space ~

Now, lets talk about Manipulation Of Diegetic Time And Space.

This technique is used by the editor in post production, Where editing takes place after each scene or shot the director wants in the film have been filmed in production. They use this to show a long period of time and cut it shorter, showing it in a short period of time. Changing the speed of the movie and pace. The editor could show ten years going by in 5 minutes in a film if they wanted to speed things up and show time is going by. It shows the audience how the character or event has changed as years go by. Showing it in a short amount of time so the audience do not get bored and keep engaged to the film.  Also, this technique can be used when showing flashbacks of a previous event or a previous memory of a character. These are used to show the audience interior images in the characters mind. Giving the audience more of an inside of the character and what they have been through in the past. Also it can show a character thinking about the future and what possibly could happen in a film to the audience. Making the audience engaged to what the character is thinking to the narrative of the film, and  how they are dealing with it.

The purpose of this is to the help the pace of the sequence. of the film or narrative. Showing years going by in a film can be for a long period of time, If showing everything that happened each year, and not the key events,  which can make the film more longer, and the audience can get bored and lack of interest. So using this technique, can shorten the time showing years go by in the film, showing it in 15 minutes, cutting from scene to scene, showing what's going on each year by the key events, r events that's gong to make the audience keep watching and intrigued.  It can help the pace of the film flow more easily and quickly, giving it a quicker pace while making the time in the film go by if your showing a child turning into an adult. You can show all the major things that happened as they grow up, cutting from each one in about 10 minutes, less or more. To keep the audience intrigued so they don't lose interest, also to show the character growing up at a good pace and not at a slow pace. It helps the films narrative go at a more of a quicker pace when cutting down long periods of time in a film, if a character in a narrative is growing up, and most of the narrative shows the character as an adult, but the film started off as the character as a child. Then using this technique will help by showing the character growing up in a quick amount of time in the film, so the narrative is able to concentrate on the character being an adult and what they go through, with just showing him growing up and the key events they wanted to show as the character eventually grows up, in half or less of the films time. Able to concentrate on where the character is in most part of the narrative and the main events in the narrative, so the audience keep on watching and they not lose interest or get confused on the narrative.

An example is in Harry Potter, Prisoner of Azkaban; released in 2004. Showing how Hermione can travel back in time using a certain object to change the future.  It shows both Hermione and Harry, using her time turner necklace to go back in time to change what happened in the past. It shows them going back in time in under 10 seconds, cutting what would of been a long period of time. It shows this as both of the character are standing still and are at a normal pace, as in the background, events that happened in the room are playing behind them going backwards at a quick pace. Before going back completely to the time they wanted to go back to. They used a quick pace of the events going back, so it wouldn't take a lot of time and room in the film, wanting to cut straight to the characters going to change what had happened, to keep the audience engaged, but still to show them that the characters are back in time or going back in time so they understand.

Here is an example of the technique being used; manipulation of diegetic time and space. This scene is from Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark, released in 1981. The scene shows Indiana Jones partner was meant to pass him the whip which helped the partner get over, so Indiana could jump across too. But the whip could not reach him, so the door started to shut on Indiana quite quickly, not giving him a long time to figure out how to get across. As Indiana started to struggle jumping across, the camera is focused on Indiana and the audience cannot see the door. Then the scene cuts to the door, showing it is about to close on Indiana, but is still a little bit open. But the door should of shut by now, given the time it had taken for Indianan to try to jump across, struggling to do so. After Indianan finally manages to jump over, the door still hasn't shut properly yet, so he manages to slide underneath unharmed. That was a technique of manipulation of time as, they kept cutting the shot in the scene to give Indiana more time to struggle across and make it in time. The editor of the scene, has not cut forward where the door would of shut using real time, leaving Indiana behind. He cuts to the door earlier in time, which slows down the door shutting on Indiana.

Another example is in the new Karate Kid film; released in 2010. It shows the child training in karate for what of had been weeks of training, but the film and editor shows this about 15 minutes. Showing a montage of his training to shorten down the time, having shown him training for weeks, would of took weeks to watch. Which audiences would lose interest. So shortening it down will make audience still intrigued, knowing that the time was going on, weeks were going by in film while he was training. So the audience still understand the narrative of the film, and how long he had been training for, leading up to his big fights with the older children, which is a big key event in the narrative.
